At the UN Security Council yesterday, Permanent Representative of Russia to the UN Vassily Nebenzia denounced Israel’s banning of the UNRWA as a threat to the children of Gaza. “The healthcare system has been destroyed, which has had a catastrophic impact on children’s access to medical services,” Nebenzia said in a statement to a meeting convened by Russia on the situation of children in the Gaza Strip.

“In these conditions, what has proved to be irreplaceable and unique is the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA),” Nebenzia said. “But UNRWA activities in the Occupied Palestinian Territory may soon be banned due to the laws adopted by the Knesset. These decisions not only violate international humanitarian law, but also the 1946 Convention on the Privileges and Immunities of the United Nations, and it is the UN Secretary-General in fact who is the guarantor of the Convention.”
