The main victim of Kiev’s decision to stop transit of Russian gas seems to be Transnistria. In Transnistria (Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic, P.M.R.), 450,000 people are without hot water, the government has introduced daily scheduled blackouts, and all industries are at a standstill. Transnistria now fears collapse.
Transnistria has hosted Russian peacekeeping forces, under United Nations mandate, since 1992. They are now known as the Operational Group of Russian Forces. They also have one of the largest ammunition depots in Europe, in Cobasna.
