An executive order signed Jan. 23 has set in motion the designating of the Houthi movement in Yemen as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO)—a designation that Trump had imposed during his first term, and which biden had lifted in 2021. This reverses the Biden order, and calls on the secretary of state to re-designate the Houthis as an FTO within 30 days.
The announcement includes: “Under President Trump, it is now the policy of the United States to cooperate with its regional partners to eliminate the Houthis’ capabilities and operations, deprive them of resources, and thereby end their attacks on U.S. personnel and civilians, U.S. partners, and maritime shipping in the Red Sea.”
