Trump Said Involving NATO in Ukraine on Russia's Doorstep Was a Big Mistake

Of the many things that President-elect Donald Trump discussed during his Jan. 7 press conference in Mar-a-Largo, one of his most cogent comments had to do with the U.S.’s provocative policy of suggesting that Ukraine could join NATO, despite Russia’s iron-clad policy going back years that this would never be tolerated.

“So you know,” Trump said, “a big part of the problem was [that] Russia for many, many years, long before Putin, said you could never have NATO involved with Ukraine. Now, they have said that that has been written in stone, and somewhere along the line, [outgoing President Joe] Biden said, no, they should be able to join NATO.
