Trump Team Has Offered Nothing Interesting on Ukraine Settlement, Says Russian UN Diplomat

The team of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has offered nothing interesting for Russia yet in its proposals on settling the Ukraine conflict, Russia’s Representative at the UN Vassily Nebenzia said in an interview with the Rossiya-24 TV channel on Jan 3., TASS reported. “These are some unformalized unclear signals about the readiness for something. We frequently hear the word ‘conflict freezing.’ Last time it was on Dec. 19 that [Russian] President [Vladimir] Putin outlined clearly and expressly the conditions, on which we are ready to talk about not freezing but completing the conflict, given the observance of our legitimate security interests. However, there is nothing in signals from the new American administration yet that can evidence that there is something of interest for us,” Nebenzia said.

Nebenzia further that lately the Ukrainian side has also indicated “signals about some accords,” which cannot be perceived seriously. The question is what the engagement line will look like when [Volodymyr] Zelenskyy, let us presume, finally shows his desire to sit down to a negotiating table. The further it is, the worse the conditions will be for him. He was told about that a long time ago. So, it is up to him to decide,” said Nebenzia.
