World Health Organization General Director Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has added his voice to the growing chorus of calls worldwide for the Israeli government to order the release of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, the head of Palestine’s Kamal Adwan Hospital who was detained by Israel Defense Forces on Dec. 27, reportedly beaten in the process, and then “disappeared” for several days before IDF spokesmen finally admitted he was in their custody.
“Kamal Adwan Hospital in North Gaza remains completely out of function and we have received no updates on the safety and wellbeing of its director Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya since his detention on 27 December,” Tedros wrote on Jan. 4 on his X account . “We continue to urge Israel to release him. We repeat: attacks on hospitals and health professionals must end. People in Gaza need access to health care.”
