Xi Jinping's Lunar New Year's Message to China Military Features Phased-Array Radar

A photo of one of China’s phased-array radars was aired on CCTV as a part of its coverage of Xi Jinping’s Lunar New Year’s message to the Chinese military. In front of the six-story radar there were several dozen early warning and monitoring troops standing at attention, reports South China Morning Post.

While the PLA has not disclosed the number or any details of its long-range early warning radar systems, the Pentagon estimates that it has “several ground-based, large-phased array warning system radars—similar in appearance to U.S. PAVE PAWS radars—that could support a missile early warning role,” according to its report last year on the development of the Chinese military. SCMP defines PAVE PAWS as “Precision Acquisition Vehicle Entry Phased Array Warning System.”
