Following reported demands from the U.K. government to provide it with full access to all encrypted data stored in its cloud, Apple has withdrawn from the U.K. market its Advanced Data Protection (ADP) service. It would have been impossible for Apple to provide access to the U.K. government without fundamentally breaking the encryption technology in total.
“As we have said many times before, we have never built a backdoor or master key to any of our products, and we never will,” said Apple in a press statement.
U.K. users attempting to join ADP are met with this message: “Apple can no longer offer Advanced Data Protection (ADP) in the United Kingdom to new users.”
