On Wednesday afternoon, Feb 12, talks between Austria’s People’s Party and the Freedom Party about forming a new coalition government collapsed. Shortly after, Austrian Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen listed the options for forming a government, following the repeated failure of coalition negotiations: New elections, a minority government, a government of experts would be possible. Or a way could be found for the parties elected in September 2024 to form a government with a majority in parliament.

Parliament would have to be dissolved for new elections. This can be done by means of a simple law, for which a simple majority is sufficient. Taking into account all deadlines and dates, according to the Austria Press Agency, an election day in June, at the earliest, would be a realistic option.
