The Telegraph ran a wild article yesterday positing that British tactical nuclear weapons—which don’t exist at present—could save Europe from Russia’s war machine the way that NATO nuclear weapons were positioned against massed Soviet tank formations during the Cold War. The Telegraph begins with describing the U.K.’s “V bomber” force of nuclear armed bombers during the 1950s-60’s (without mentioning how quickly it went obsolete).
By the early 1990s, as hostilities with Russia started to ease, Britain had phased out these aircraft, relying on an arsenal of powerful strategic warheads based out of submarines instead, The Telegraph says. But now, as Donald Trump’s diplomacy with Russia sends shockwaves throughout Europe, Britain and its allies may have to develop a modern V-force to carry so-called tactical nuclear weapons.
