The leading diplomats of China and India met on the sidelines of the G20 summit taking place in Johannesburg, South Africa. Foreign Minister and Politburo member Wang Yi met with Indian Minister of External Affairs S. Jaishankar.
Wang emphasized that the meeting follows President Xi Jinping’s meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Kazan, Russia at the 2024 BRICS summit. That meeting was preceded by an agreement between the two countries to calm down their border dispute.
Wang said that “China and India, as two ancient civilizations and neighboring countries, should trust and support each other and help each other succeed,” according to the brief Chinese press release. The two countries should work to commemorate the 75th anniversary of their establishment of diplomatic relations.
Jaishankar pointed to the value in stable India-China ties and their shared responsibility through such fora as the G20, Shanghai Cooperation Organization, and BRICS.
