To understand their mindset, look again at a speech to NATO troops Bauer made in 2021, where he said that the Afghan war had not been a lost war, and the human sacrifices were worth it. This, although the main aim of the war, the training of an Afghan army, was a miserable failure. It was the Afghan army that collapsed, not the NATO forces.
As for the idea of NATO member troops to be deployed as “guarantee” to Ukraine, this is a no-go. NATO Article 5 would be activated even if NATO troops are used in a peacekeeping function.
