The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) was informed by the Ukrainian government that a drone struck and caused a fire at Chernobyl’s New Safe Confinement building. The drone strike occurred at 0150 local time on Valentine’s Day. The New Safe Confinement is a large structure that was built to contain and prevent any radioactive releases from the damaged reactor unit 5 of the Chernobyl nuclear plant.
Fire personnel arrived within minutes, but the blaze was still burning hours later.
