TASS and other press agencies are covering the statement issued Feb. 8 by Rostelecom, the largest digital services provider in Russia, that “Rostelecom’s underwater cable was damaged in the Baltic Sea as a result of external influence.” It indicated that this damage didn’t affect customers, and that repairs were underway.
Additionally, RT noted that in recent months, Finland, Norway and Sweden have reported similar undersea cable damage in the Baltic Sea. Although there are no official accusations of sabotage, NATO has used these incidents to throw suspicion regarding Russian involvement, and giving NATO the excuse to expand its surveillance capabilities in the Baltic.
