European Council President António Costa announced today that a special European Union summit with a very special guest will be held on March 2: Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelenskyy is invited. The summit, according to Costa, will focus on supporting Kiev and bolstering Europe’s defenses.

Costa told leaders in an invitation letter that the “new momentum” around a Ukraine settlement “should lead to a comprehensive, just and lasting peace” and that he had invited Zelenskyy to discuss “the latest developments.”

“The EU and its member states are ready to take more responsibility for Europe’s security,” Costa wrote. They should “should therefore be prepared for a possible European contribution to the security guarantees that will be necessary to ensure a lasting peace in Ukraine.”
