Syria’s interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa made his first official visit, going to Türkiye, where he met with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Accompanying delegations met for three hours after the two had agreed to raise bilateral relations to a strategic partnership.
None of this is surprising, since Türkiye played a key role in bringing al-Sharaa to power in a military operation that overthrew the Assad government. While the issue of terrorism, and especially the Syrian Kurdish separatists, were discussed, the questions of reconstruction of Syria were on the agenda. On this issue al-Sharaa said the upcoming phase will focus on “boosting trade exchanges and joint investments, particularly in infrastructure reconstruction projects, aiming to achieve economic recovery and to support a better future for both countries.”
Al-Sharaa also invited Erdogan to visit Syria “at the earliest possible opportunity.”
