March 2, 2025 (EIRNS)—British politicians, in the wake of the Trump-Zelenskyy blowup at the White House on Feb. 28, are calling for Starmer’s invitation to Trump for a state visit to Britain be canceled, or at least delayed until Trump apologizes and says the right things on Ukrainian security.
Shadow home affairs minister Alicia Kearns last night said: “State visits should be conferred to the most honorable of allies, not to curry favor,” reported the Daily Mail. “No state visit should proceed until the steadfastness of the U.S.’s commitment to her allies is assured. His Majesty should not have to carry the weight of Keir’s diplomatic failings.” She called the Oval Office clash a “degrading spectacle” and “performative bullying for a U.S. audience” by Mr. Trump, adding: “Zelenskyy is fighting for the survival of his people: an innocent people being murdered by a barbaric imperialist and dictator.”
However, a Trump source said that recalling the invitation would be “very unwise, unless the U.K. wants to undo all the goodwill generated by the Prime Minister’s trip.” They added: “The best path forward would be for Sir Keir to persuade President Zelenskyy to apologize to President Trump and the American people.”
