J.D. Vance Going to Greenland, as Danish Prime Minister Insists, We Will Resist U.S. Pressure

March 25, 2025 (EIRNS)—U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance just announced in a video posted to X, that he will be arriving in Greenland on March 28. He said that he will be visiting the U.S. Space Force base there and checking out the country’s security. A lot of countries are threatening Greenland, and threatening to use Greenland’s territories and the waterways around it to threaten the U.S., Canada, and Greenland, said Vance. Speaking for Trump, as he said, the U.S. wants to reinvigorate the security of the people of Greenland, which is important for world security. The leaders of the U.S. and Denmark have ignored Greenland for far too long, he said, and we think we can take things in a different direction.

J.D. Vance’s visit will exacerbate the provocation of a visit by a high-level U.S. delegation that the Greenlandic and Danish governments have already called unacceptable.

That forthcoming delegation of U.S. officials to Greenland, billed as a “private visit,” now includes Secretary of State Marco Rubio (according to Trump), Energy Secretary Chris Wright, Second Lady Usha Vance (who will arrive on March 27) and National Security Advisor Mike Waltz. Their visit has now elicited the harshest response so far from Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, which has made headlines around the world.

In an interview with Danmarks Radio and TV2 today, but before the announcement of J.D. Vance’s Greenland trip, Frederiksen said, “This [visit] cannot be seen independently of the statements and reports we have heard from the U.S. side.... It is clearly not a visit that is about what Greenland needs, or the kind of foreign visit Greenland wants now. That’s why I have to say that there is unacceptable pressure being put on Greenland and Denmark in this situation. And it’s a pressure we will resist.

“You cannot make a private visit with official representatives from another country. The acting Greenlandic government has made it very clear that they do not want a visit right now because they do not have a government [yet, because of the recent elections]. So these kinds of official meetings cannot be held.

“President Trump is serious. He wants Greenland. Therefore, it cannot be seen independently of anything else. Therefore, no matter how you look at it, it is a completely unacceptable pressure on Greenland, Greenlandic politicians and the Greenlandic population, but it is also on Denmark and thus the whole Kingdom” of Denmark, Greenland and the Faroe Islands.

Frederiksen said that she agrees with the provisional Greenlandic government leader Múte B. Egede that the visit shows a lack of respect.

“We are allies [with the U.S.], we have a defense agreement on Greenland dating back to 1951. There is no indication in either Denmark or Greenland that we do not want cooperation with the Americans. But when you make a visit like this and the Greenlandic politicians ... say that they don’t want this visit, you can’t interpret it as respectful....

”[The way that allies should cooperate on joint concerns, as we have done for many years] has to be done in a way that there is respect for national sovereignty, for territorial integrity.... This is unacceptable pressure, and pressure we will resist.”

In response to Egede’s call for more international support, Frederiksen said that there is massive support from the closest allies among the Nordic countries and the EU.

Yesterday, Trump said that the delegation was “invited.” However, the provisional Greenland government put out a statement that “The Greenlandic government has not invited anyone for a visit, neither officially nor privately. The current government is an interim government awaiting the formation of a new government, and we kindly ask all countries to respect that.”

Because of the negative reaction from Greenland and Denmark including planned demonstrations, during the night, the visit was changed to include only J.D. Vance and his wife, and they will only visit the U.S. military base.
