EU Countries Balk at $43 Billion Weapons Package for Ukraine

March 18, 2025 (EIRNS)—The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper yesterday reported that the €40 billion weapon proposal of Kaja Kallas, a deep-seated Russophobe and the EU’s new foreign policy head, to surge weapons into Ukraine, is meeting resistance from an array of countries. Italy, Spain, Portugal and even France are now balking.

Previously, the EU had pledged €15 billion, but most countries had not yet put their money where their mouths might have been. Denmark alone has contributed more than Italy, Spain, and France combined; and Germany has yet to even approve the €3 billion on which it is being counted. Kallas claims that that, plus an additional €25 billion, has “broad political support,” but at yesterday’s EU foreign ministers’ meeting in Brussels, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said the proposal needed further discussion and that they “are waiting for the Trump-Putin telephone call to see if there will be any steps forward in order to reach a ceasefire.” Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares underlined the lack of agreement, stating: “We will see how the debate goes, but there is no decision on the matter yet.”
