Federal Judge Stops Deportation of Turkish Fulbright Scholar

March 29, 2025 (EIRNS)—On March 28 the U.S. District Judge Denise Casper issued a brief order stipulating that Rümeysa Öztürk, the Tufts University doctoral student arrested by masked ICE agents on March 25, “shall not be removed from the United States until further order of this court.” Öztürk is currently being held at ICE detention facilities in Louisiana known as the “Black Hole.” For nearly 24 hours after her arrest, she was not able to speak to her lawyers, family, or friends. Öztürk has never been charged with any crime or violations of school policy. According to members of her legal team Öztürk was arrested apparently in retaliation for a Tufts Daily op-ed she co-authored last year.
