French Sovereignist and Former Military Officers Oppose Sharing French Nuclear Deterrence

March 9, 2025 (EIRNS)—Today, the website of the French political party Solidarité & Progrès published “the following call written by sovereignists representing the best of our defense commitments.”

TITLE: “Nuclear Deterrence, in Essence, iIs the Expression of a National Will and Cannot Be Shared”

“TRIBUNE by Colonel Hogard, Colonel Corvez and Admiral Gaucherand: President Macron says he is open to a European nuclear deterrent, in stark contrast to decades of French independence on the subject.

“Nuclear weapons are not more powerful than any other weapon, they are the ultimate weapon for defending a nation whose very existence, outside any conventional battlefield, must deter any potential enemy from attacking it, for fear of the terrible, unbearable reprisals that would entail for the attacker.

“This is the fundamental principle of nuclear deterrence, conceived by French strategists—Generals Gallois, Ailleret and others—and envisaged by General de Gaulle as early as the end of the Second World War, preparing the country for this by organizing research and creating the Atomic Energy Commission [Commissariat à l'Énergie Atomique] in 1945, and implemented for France as soon as he returned to power in 1958.
