March 15, 2025 (EIRNS)—The G7 foreign ministers met in Charlevoix, Québec yesterday and issued a joint statement that, among other things, demands that Russia agree to an unconditional ceasefire in the war with Ukraine, but that otherwise does not condemn Russia as the aggressor. The change in tone was dictated by the fact that a ceasefire proposal is now on the table.
“G7 members reaffirmed their unwavering support for Ukraine in defending its territorial integrity and right to exist, and its freedom, sovereignty and independence.” It called on Russia to accept the 30-day ceasefire proposal put in front of it “on equal terms and implementing it fully.” The ministers “discussed imposing further costs on Russia in case such a ceasefire is not agreed, including through further sanctions, caps on oil prices, as well as additional support for Ukraine, and other means.”
Furthermore, “They emphasized that any ceasefire must be respected and underscored the need for robust and credible security arrangements to ensure that Ukraine can deter and defend against any renewed acts of aggression.”
