March 27, 2025 (EIRNS)—Urging the EU Commission to instantly enter talks with the USA, Hildegard Mueller, president of the German national carmakers association VDA, pointed out that, if not averted, profit losses on the U.S. market in the range of 30% or more would confront German producers of cars. This would involve several billion euros in losses for each.
The U.S.A. is the most important sales market for the German automotive industry. Almost one in three Porsches and one in six BMWs were sold in North America in 2024. For VW, Audi, and Mercedes-Benz, the share was 12 to 15% each. No other economy imported as many new cars from Germany in 2024 as the U.S.A.: It led with a 13.1% share of exports, followed by the U.K. (11.3%) and France (7.4%).
