Hersh Says Trump Interested in Doing Business with Putin

March 21, 2025 (EIRNS)—In his latest posting, veteran investigative journalist Seymour Hersh says that Ukrainian and Russian generals are talking about how to end the war. His starting point is the interview that Gen. Valerii Zaluzhnyi gave to London’s The Economist about two years ago in which he said that the war was a stalemate. “I wrote at the time that Zaluzhnyi’s stunning words had been planned in advance, as The Economist editors couldn’t have known, via a series of indirect contacts between Zaluzhnyi and Russian Gen. Valery Gerasimov, who has been chief of staff of the Russian army since 2012,” Hersh tells us.

“Generals from Ukraine and Russia are still talking, I was told this week, and the prospects of a settlement are much better because the input from the U.S. comes not from the rigid Biden administration but from President Donald Trump, who has been far more open to contact with Russia,” Hersh reports.

“Trump is interested in doing business with Russian President Vladimir Putin,” he continues, adding that Russia has millions of tons of minerals, including rare earths, and metal deposits that are still unmined.

Hersh reports further in this vein that Trump’s main ambition was to lift the current economic sanctions on Russia and form a partnership with Putin to turn Crimea into a major international resort and do the same in the Donbass.
