March 3, 2025 (EIRNS)—Iran’s current vice president and former foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, has tendered his resignation, but President Masoud Pezeshkian has not yet responded. As foreign minister, Zarif negotiated the landmark 2015 nuclear deal with Germany and the UN Security Council permanent members—the JCPOA—and has since come under public and abusive attack which is the cause of his resignation.

On March 3 Zarif posted on X that although he had “faced the most ridiculous insults, slanders, and threats against myself and my family in the past six months, and even within the government, I spent the most bitter forty years of service,” he still continued to serve. But he met with the head of the judiciary, who “recommended that I return to university to prevent further pressure on the government.” Zarif hoped that by his stepping aside, the government will be better able to achieve its objectives: “I am still proud of my support for the esteemed Dr. Pezeshkian and I wish him and other true servants of the people the best.”
