March 19, 2025 (EIRNS)—Speaking at the “Centro San Domenico” Catholic cultural association in Bologna on Jan 17, Italian central banker Fabio Panetta rejected the mainstream narrative according to which military spending is good for the economy.
After calling for an economic model that combines “growth with the overcoming of poverty,” Panetta stated: “Peace and prosperity are linked by a profound bond. Peace—he said—is not only the absence of conflicts, but the creation of conditions that allow every individual to live a dignified life, free from fear and poverty”. At the same time, he added, “a prosperity that does not generate widespread well-being is an ephemeral prosperity, which risks generating conflicts and instability.”.
