March 14, 2025 (EIRNS)—At a Tagesspiegel event in Berlin yesterday to present his new book Die Kriege der Gegenwart und der Beginn einer neuen Weltordnung (The Wars of the Present and the Beginning of a New World Order), former German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer (Greens) endorsed talks about an extension of the French nuclear umbrella and called for similar talks with the U.K. It is an illusion to only call for diplomacy, he claimed. “Anyone who wants to negotiate with Russia needs great diplomatic skill, but this diplomatic skill must be backed up by military power.... In Russia, only the U.S.A. is taken seriously.”
In the view of former Foreign Minister Fischer, U.S. President Donald Trump is doomed to failure in the long term. “The question is what he will destroy in the meantime,” said the 76-year-old Green politician. Trump is unreliable, Fischer said. “I don’t think you’re doing him an injustice when you say that when he gets up in the morning, he doesn’t know what he’s going to decide that day.”
