March 14, 2025 (EIRNS)—On Friday, March 14, Mark Carney was sworn in as the 24th Prime Minister of Canada. During the ceremony, He also swore an oath of allegiance to HRH King Charles III, Canada’s head of state.
While this oath of allegiance is standard procedure for an incoming Prime Minister of Canada, it takes on a whole new significance given the particular relations of Carney to the City of London, the laird of the British financial oligarchy, and the very personal relationships to King Charles by Mark Carney and his wife Diana Fox-Carney.
Also of significance is the breaking of a Canadian tradition that a new prime minister of Canada usually travels to Washington, D.C. on his first state visit. Not Mark Carney, who until very recently has been a British citizen, an Irish citizen, and also a Canadian citizen. He had to relinquish the first two in order to run for prime minister of Canada. In the coming few days, Prime Minister Carney will travel to meet and consult with British Prime Minister Starmer and Foreign Secretary David Lammy. He will also travel to France to consult with President Emmanuel Macron.
When he returns to Canada, sometime late next week, he will again go to Rideau Hall to discuss with Governor General Mary Simon, the date he has decided on to launch a general federal election campaign (which will be launched at the absolute latest date of March 23).
The actual voting day for Canadians from all 10 Provinces and the 3 Territories, after an unusually short campaigning period, will be either on Monday, April 28 or Monday, May 5th.
