Merz Again Raises Possibility of British and French Nukes for Europe

March 1, 2025 (EIRNS)—In an interview with Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung published on Friday, Feb. 28, Friedrich Merz, the likley next German Chancellor, reiterated his call for nuclear sharing with France and Britian.

Just prior to the Feb. 23 elections in which Merz’s CDU/CSU party came out on top, the former BlackRock executive told The Telegraph that a discussion needed to happen with Britain and France to see whether nuclear sharing could apply to Germany. Now likely to take the Chancellorship, Merz doubled down in his interview with FAZ: “Today we have what is known as nuclear sharing with the Americans. I want to discuss whether we can go in this direction with France or the U.K. in the coalition negotiations and also with our partners in Europe, the EU and NATO.” Merz added, “The credibility of so-called extended deterrence by the Americans, which is also the backbone of German defense policy, is more in doubt than ever before. Never before has an American president shaken this credibility as much as Donald Trump.”
