March 9, 2025 (EIRNS)—In an exclusive interview with Sputnik, MEP Ľuboš Blaha, deputy leader of Slovakia’s Smer party, asserted that the May 15, 2024 attempt on the life of Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico was to attack him for his efforts to hold a dialogue with Russian President Putin and organize a peaceful settlement to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. A video of the interview was also posted on Sputnik’s X account.
“Imagine you have a different opinion, and somebody wants to kill you. What is it? This is European democracy now. This is European freedom now,” Ľubos Blaha said.
He reminded listeners that the would-be assassin was anti-Russian, who wanted Slovakia, which borders Ukraine, to collaborate with the Banderites and support the Ukraine regime against Russia. “This man almost killed my prime minister because of his opinions … because he wants to have good relations with Russia,” said Blaha.
On the subject of Kiev regime chief Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Blaha remarked that Zelenskyy is neither a statesman nor a leader, and might have some psychological problems. For example, Zelenskyy cut direct supplies of gas to Ukraine from Russia, but now his regime has to buy the same Russian gas which transits Slovakia.
“When there was a direct transit to Ukraine from Russia, in this first case, it was beneficial for Ukraine, because they had some money from this. This second option has even no benefits for Ukraine. They are just funding the war of Russia against Ukraine in this logic. He’s crazy!” Blaha said.
He noted proudly how Fico had accepted an invitation from President Putin to visit Moscow; Fico announced separately that his visit to Russia was to celebrate the 80th anniversary of Victory Day on May 9, 2025.
In conclusion, Blaha invited associates from within Slovakia, as well as officials from EU countries to join their delegation in the trip to Moscow, to show “that there are people in the European Parliament, and the European Union, who are not insane; who are respectful towards Russia’s sacrifices, who are respecting our anti-fascist tradition…. This is a great historical opportunity—this 80th anniversary of the victory over fascism….”
