March 25, 2025 (EIRNS)—At least three students who have been active in campus protests against the genocide in Gaza are now suing members of the Trump administration to stop their deportations. The March 8 arrest of Columbia University graduate student Mahmoud Khalil has garnered international press coverage with a series of ongoing legal actions. On March 24 another Columbia University student, U.S. permanent resident Yunseo Chung, who has lived in the U.S. since the age of 7, filed a lawsuit to stop her own deportation. And at Cornell University, Momodou Taal, a dual citizen of the U.K. and The Gambia, joined two other students to file a lawsuit which seeks a nationwide injunction of the enforcement of the Administration’s Executive Orders 14161 and 14188 to block any deportation or prosecution based on protected free speech.
The plaintiffs maintain that these Executive Orders have unlawfully subjected individuals to surveillance, arrest, and deportation based solely on constitutionally protected political expression.
