Turkish Opposition Leader Jailed, Protests Growing

March 24, 2025 (EIRNS)—Ekram Imamoglu, Mayor of Istanbul and likely the top presidential contender against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, for the Republican People’s Party (CHP) in the 2028 elections, was formally jailed on Sunday, March 23, over corruption charges after having been detained by police several days ago. Protests have erupted in Türkiye as a result, and have created a serious situation for police and security forces in the country. Imamoglu’s university diploma was revoked on March 22, which is a legal requirement for all presidential candidates.

Imamoglu posted on X yesterday: “My dear citizens, Türkiye woke up to a great betrayal today…. I invite our nation to a responsible struggle for rights.” He invited Turkish citizens to vote for him in the CHP primary on Sunday.
