COPENHAGEN, March 23, 2025 (EIRNS)—On March 22, it was first made public that U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance’s wife Usha Vance would visit Greenland on March 27 in connection with the leading sled-dog race. It was later revealed that National Security Advisor Mike Waltz would accompany her. Their visit is outside of diplomatic channels. It is a big escalation in the stated intention by Trump to take control of Greenland, “one way or another,” as he voiced it in his March 4 State of the Union Address to Congress, also pitting the U.S. against NATO ally Denmark.
In connection with the visit, it is reported that the U.S. had requested meetings with Greenlandic and Danish politicians, but their requests were rejected. TV2 reported that their sources say that Waltz would inspect the U.S. military base there.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen wrote the following, in a response to Danmarks Radio:
“The visit from the U.S. cannot be seen independently from the public statements that have been made. In the Kingdom [of Denmark— Denmark, Greenland and the Faroe Islands], we want to cooperate with the Americans. But it must be a cooperation based on the fundamental values of sovereignty and respect between countries and peoples.
