U.K. Defense Secretary Explains British Policy on Ukraine

March 26, 2025 (EIRNS)—U.K. Defense Secretary John Healey appeared before the House of Commons on March 24 to answer mostly softball questions on various military matters. On Ukraine, Healey sophistically asserted that British military support for Ukraine is actually backing up President Donald Trump’s policy of seeking peace. “This year the U.K. will provide £4.5 billion in military support, the highest ever sum,” he said. “We are fully behind President Trump’s pledge to bring a lasting peace to Ukraine, and we want to see success in today’s talks, but we will not jeopardize the peace by forgetting about the war.” The British policy is actually hostile to that of Trump: the British want the war to continue; Trump is suing for peace.

The U.K.-French effort “to pull together a coalition of nations willing to step in and help ensure lasting peace in any negotiated settlement in Ukraine is critical and substantial. The U.K. is determined and will lead that effort,” Healey stated. He noted that U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer has said that in the context of a negotiated peace, the security arrangements or guarantees in Ukraine will need U.S. support. “As Defense Secretary, my job now is to put Ukraine in the strongest possible position by continuing levels of U.K. military aid, encouraging other nations to do more, and developing—alongside the French—plans for multinational support to maintain the long-term security of any peace in Ukraine,” he said.
