Germany’s AfD Party Pulls Equal Approval with CDU Now

Support for Germany’s likely new Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, and his Christian Democratic Union is further eroding: An INSA opinion poll carried out for Bildzeitung, the leading mass tabloid, says that as his CDU/CSU is down to a rating of 24%, the Alternative for Germany (AfD) improved to 24% as of April 4, a further improvement as compared to a week ago. The Social Democrats are third with 16%, followed by the Greens and Die Linke (The Left) with 11% each. Were there national elections on Sunday, April 6, that would be the result. The popularity of a new government of Christian Democrats and Social Democrats is, therefore, down to a combined 40%—and the government has not even taken office.
