Ahead of Second Meeting with U.S., Iran Foreign Minister Meets with Putin and IAEA Chief

In the lead-up to the April 12 indirect talks with the U.S., mediated by Oman, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has launched a round of high-level diplomacy—meeting with Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

This followed the previous 48 hours of Iran’s confusion with Washington’s mixed messages.

Grossi, visiting Tehran, wrote on X that diplomacy is “urgently needed” and cooperation with the IAEA is “indispensable” for verifying the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program. After also meeting with Atomic Energy Organization of Iran chief Mohammed Eslami, Grossi said that while it is “not an easy process,” the work continued. Araghchi urged the IAEA to avoid political pressures and said it could play a “crucial role” in resolving the issue.
