As part of this year’s BRICS preparations for their full summit in July, BRICS countries’ deputy foreign ministers and special envoys for the Middle East convened in Brasilia on March 28. The participants discussed a range of conflicts and issues affecting the region, and released a joint statement at the conclusion of their meeting.
The statement focused heavily on the conflict in Palestine, and emphasized “the need to address the root causes of regional tensions, including foreign intervention and occupation, especially the Israeli illegal occupation in Palestine.” It stressed the need for a two-state solution and the upholding of UN resolutions on Palestine, and endorsed the Arab Peace Initiative. It also “welcomed the launching of the ‘Global Alliance for the Implementation of the Two-State Solution.’”
The participants also “emphasized the importance of contributing to post-conflict countries’ reconstruction and development,” and pledged support for efforts to reconstruct Gaza, “as agreed in the Emergency Arab Summit on Palestine of 4 March 2025”—the theme of which will be taken up at an upcoming summit in Cairo.
