Cause of Nationwide Spanish Electrical Blackout Still Unclear

There have been major electrical blackouts in European countries before, but the April 28 blackout that affected Portugal, Spain, and a strip in the south of France, was unprecedented: within a few seconds, output dropped from 26 GW to 12 GW. While most of the power supply was up again by Tuesday morning, April 29, specialists are now investigating to discover what actually happened.

Some people do not investigate, however, because they already have decided that a Russian cyberattack is the cause. According to El País, the Spanish secret service is investigating whether the power outage was the result of a cyber attack. According to the president of the Andalusian regional government Juan Manuel Moreno, information from the regional cyber security center indicates “that a power outage of this magnitude can only be attributed to a cyber attack.”
