China to India: Work Together Against U.S. Tariff War?

The spokesperson for China’s embassy in India, Yu Jing, posted on X that “China’s economy is underpinned by a system that ensures steady growth and produces positive spillovers. Chinese manufacturing is built on a complete and continually upgrading industrial system, sustained investment in R&D, and a strong focus on innovation,” generating beneficial effects for the rest of the world. Yu then suggested that China and India should work together to overcome the challenges posed by U.S. tariffs, as they hinder the development of countries of the Global South. Such trade and tariff wars are harming all parties, so they should consult and cooperate to deal with the situation.

In the first public comments by China’s President Xi Jinping since the escalation of the trade war, {South China Morning Post reported that he addressed a two-day, high-profile central working conference on regional diplomacy. He pledged to strengthen strategic bonds with neighboring nations by “appropriately” managing differences and enhanced supply chain ties. Xi Jinping has called, recently, for China and India to work more closely, including their economic relations.

India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, at the Rising Bharat Summit in Delhi, expressed caution today as to how the tariff war will proceed, but said that India plans to hold talks with Washington for a trade deal, and presently is maintaining an open and constructive dialogue with the U.S. He said that they are one of the few countries that has an “understanding in principle” with the Trump administration.
