In one year, German manufacturers with at least 50 employees lost 68,000 jobs, according to the Federal Statistical Office. This is 1.2% fewer than a year earlier. The Institute for Macroeconomics and Business Cycle Research, which is close to the trade unions, sees this development as “a clear sign of deindustrialization,” as its scientific director Sebastian Dullien said.
Compared to the end of 2018—when the peak of 5.7 million employees was reached—there are now 172,000, or 3.0%, fewer employees.
The Handelsblatt Research team forecast a decade of stagnation.
