NIH Conditions Grants on Not Boycotting Israel

The National Institutes of Health will not approve or pay out grants to individuals or groups that boycott Israel, according to an April 21 notice posted by the NIH.

It refuses money to anyone involved in a “discriminatory prohibited boycott.” While it sounds general, this phrase specifically means “refusing to deal, cutting commercial relations, or otherwise limiting commercial relations specifically with Israeli companies or with companies doing business in or with Israel or authorized by, licensed by, or organized under the laws of Israel to do business.”

The NIH says that by accepting grants, recipients are certifying that “They do not engage in and will not during the term of this award engage in, a discriminatory prohibited boycott.”
