U.S. President Trump threatened on April 10 to throw more tariffs and possible sanctions on Mexico, if it doesn’t “hand over” to the U.S. the 1.3 million acre-feet of water it “owes” the state of Texas under the 1944 Water Treaty. Asserting that Mexico is “stealing” water from Texas farmers, Trump used his Truth Social post to announce “THAT ENDS NOW!” He reported that he had halted water shipments to Tijuana, Mexico last month, and threatened that “we will keep escalating consequences, including TARIFFS and, maybe even SANCTIONS, until Mexico honors the Treaty, and GIVES TEXAS THE WATER THEY ARE OWED!”

There is only one, giant problem with his plan: the existing rivers and aquifers in the North American continent’s southwest desert are drying up—on both sides of the border!
