Saudi Arabia and Iran Offer To Mediate Indo-Pakistan Conflict

Both Saudi Arabia and Iran have offered to mediate between India and Pakistan following the April 22 terror attack in Indian-controlled Kashmir. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, said on April 25 that Tehran was willing to aid in restoring relations between India and Pakistan after tensions flared between the two countries following the attack, reported India’s Hindustan Times. “India and Pakistan are brotherly neighbors of Iran, enjoying relations rooted in centuries-old cultural and civilizational ties. Like other neighbors, we consider them our foremost priority,” he said in a post on X.

“Tehran stands ready to use its good offices in Islamabad and New Delhi to forge greater understanding at this difficult time, in line with the spirit taught by Persian poet Saadi,” whom he then quoted:

“Human Beings are members of a whole

In creation of one essence and soul

If one member is inflicted with pain

Other members uneasy will remain.”

Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan held separate phone calls with his Pakistani and Indian counterparts. A statement from the Pakistan Foreign Office said Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar discussed regional developments with Farhan, rejecting India’s accusations and cautioning against “further escalatory moves,” reported the Dawn. In the statement, Dar reaffirmed Pakistan’s determination to respond firmly to any aggression from India and that both leaders agreed to continue consultations.

In a statement on X, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said he discussed the Pahalgam attack and its “cross-border linkages” with the Saudi Foreign Minister.

In the immediate aftermath of the attack, China reacted quickly and condemned the terrorist acts, at the same time calling for reducing the tensions between the two countries. President Donald Trump called the action deeply disturbing and expressed his “full support” for India in its fight against terrorism. Russian President Vladimir Putin condemned it as “a brutal crime” and called for a “deserved punishment” for those responsible.
