The German Social Democrats’ energy spokesperson Nina Scheer supports the reopening of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, Politico reported on Thursday. The pipeline had carried natural gas from Russia to Germany until it was blown up in Sept. 2022, just months after President Joe Biden had promised that the U.S. would shut down Nord Stream, one way or the other.
Since the U.S. sanctions on the Nord Stream 2 pipeline were “unlawful from the start … lifting them would be in line with international law. In the interest of pursuing diplomatic paths to peace and ending the war of aggression against Ukraine, steps that could potentially support this process should be encouraged,” Scheer told Politico.
