According to Bloomberg, Canada as 2025 president of the G7 had prepared a statement saying that Russia’s attack on the Ukrainian city of Sumy was proof that Russia was determined to continue the war. However, Washington refused to sign it. As a consequence, there was no statement.
According to Bloomberg’s sources, “President Donald Trump’s administration told allies it couldn’t sign the statement denouncing the attack as it is ‘working to preserve the space to negotiate peace.’”
The massacre of civilians in Sumy “is becoming the tool to fuel the attempt to thwart Donald Trump’s attempt to reach an understanding to end the conflict in Ukraine,” wrote Gianandrea Gaiani today, director of the Italian defense, military, and industrial online magazine Analisi Difesa. “A ceasefire that Zelenskyy and the EU (and several member state governments) see as smoke and mirrors despite the dramatic human and economic damage caused by this very conflict to Ukrainians and Europeans.”
