Will U.S.-Iran Meeting Succeed Under Military Threats?

It’s touch-and-go as to whether the U.S. and Iran will make progress in the April 12 scheduled meetings in Oman. Yesterday, President Donald Trump was asked whether he expects “something definitive” to emerge from the meeting. He began in a moderate fashion: “It’s a start. We have a little time, but we don’t have much time.” Then he continued: “Because we’re not going to let them have a nuclear weapon. When you start talks, you know if they’re going along well or not. And I would say the conclusion would be when I think they’re not going along well. So that’s just a feeling.”

Asked about the possible use of force, Trump said: “Oh, if necessary? Absolutely! ... With Iran, yeah, if it requires military, we’re going to have military.” Then he added: “Israel will obviously be very much involved in that—they’ll be the leader of that.” Finally, an afterthought: “But nobody leads us. We do what we want to do.”
