Merz Evades Question About Taurus, Attacks Vance

In Germany’s primetime “Maybrit Illner” TV show, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, aware that the Taurus issue is unpopular, made an attempt to claim that nobody in his government is now talking about the issue. But talkmaster Illner countered him, saying, “Yes we are!” with a reference to SPD parliamentary group leader Matthias Miersch, who, earlier this week, had categorically rejected a Taurus delivery.

Merz then claimed that “the Taurus is being hyped up a bit, as if it were just below the nuclear threshold. That’s wrong,” trying to portray the Taurus as a “normal missile,” like the cruise missiles France and the U.K. were delivering to Ukraine. A German delivery was not on the agenda right now, as the delivery preparation and training of Ukrainian personnel was required. In any case, he declared not to intend discussing the issue in public.
