The inimitable John Bolton, who was dumped from President Trump’s first administration, was cited in the New York Post's wild assault on Trump special envoy Steve Witkoff on April 27. Bolton, a classic neocon chickenhawk (who both supported the Vietnam War and dodged military service at the time), posted his attack on X: “Witkoff’s discussions with Iran are a waste of oxygen…. The Iranians are trying to buy time and relief from economic sanctions so they can rebuild their military.” In his attempt to regain a voice in the White House, Bolton echoed Trump’s complaint that Moscow might be prolonging talks, writing: “We cannot just ‘tap along’ with the Iranians.” Then he compared Trump to Obama: “Trump is making the same mistakes Obama did in 2015.”
Bolton’s colleague at the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies, Russia Program Deputy Director John Hardie, is cited criticizing Witkoff for not including “experienced Russia hands.” The Post then goes on: “A member of Trump’s first administration was more succinct. ‘Nice guy, but a bumbling f–king idiot.’”
