Gen. Abdel-Fattah Burhan, the head of Sudan’s army, appointed a prime minister on May 19. He is Kamil al-Taib Idris, who will now form a transitional government. Sudan has not had a prime minister since Abdalla Hamdok resigned in 2022.
The paramilitary Rapid Support Force (RSF), formerly part of the government of Sudan, is still not defeated, and is digging in, especially in North Darfur, a province rich in unexploited oil. It announced that it had formed an independent government a month ago, on April 15.
