President Trump insists that he has placed a proposal on the table for resolving the Iranian nuclear issue and that Iran has simply to accept it to prevent military action. While Trump initially said that they had to abandon nuclear energy entirely, it seems now that the only issue of contention is the enrichment of uranium. The new proposal from the Administration seems to indicate that Iran should not enrich uranium at all, whereas the Iranians would agree only to prohibit enrichment to a high level, which would give them a capability of creating weapons-grade plutonium.
Ali Shamkhani, a top adviser to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has said that Iran would commit to never making nuclear weapons, get rid of its stockpiles of highly enriched uranium which can be weaponized, agree to enrich uranium only to the lower levels needed for civilian use, and allow international inspectors to supervise the process, in exchange for the immediate lifting of all economic sanctions on Iran.
